A pool in New Zealand typically costs about $75,000 installed, ranging from $35,000 for a budget job to $250,000+ at the premium end (CheckMyBuilder, updated June 2026). Fencing adds $5,000 – $25,000 of that and needs its own building consent, and your council inspects the barrier at least every three years.

CheckMyBuilder's note on its own bands is that pools are priced by type and size rather than per square metre: an 8 m × 4 m fibreglass pool typically lands between $35,000 – $60,000 installed, before fencing, decking and landscaping.

Plunge, lap and above-ground pools are not on this page. We could not find a New Zealand source that publishes their installed price and shows its working, so we left them out rather than guess. Editorial policy.
The fence is a cost line, not a footnote
Every residential pool that can hold 400 mm of water needs a barrier (Building Act s 162B), the barrier needs its own building consent (Schedule 1 clause 23(2)), and your council must ensure it is inspected at least every three years (s 162D). CheckMyBuilder prices fencing at $5,000 – $25,000 and says plainly that it is not optional.
