Plunge pools in NZ: what they cost in 2026, by size, and the rules

NZ plunge pool kitsets run $14,500–38,995 incl. GST by size (Southern Plunge Pools, Nov 2026), before install and fence. Sizes, litres, a worked all-in budget, and why most heated plunge pools still need a fence.

By NZ Swimming Pools

Key takeaways

  • A kitset plunge pool shell costs $14,500 (2.4 × 2.4 m) to $38,995 (8 × 3 m) incl. GST at Southern Plunge Pools, and $27,000–39,000 at Tiny Pools. Neither price includes delivery or installation.
  • Spa World puts a small above-ground plunge pool at $10,000–20,000, an in-ground one at around $25,000, and a fully featured fibreglass one at up to $50,000.
  • Worked example: a 4.0 × 2.4 m kitset with heat pump ($25,095) plus install oversight ($4,995) plus a fence ($5,750–28,750 incl. GST) comes to $35,840–58,840, before delivery, the slab and the electrician.
  • A plunge pool is still a pool: if it can hold 400 mm of water it needs a barrier (Building Act s 162B). Only a heated pool with 5 m² of water or less can use a cover instead, and every kitset size listed below is bigger than that.
  • Every listed size holds 35,000 litres or less, so on the ground the pool itself is usually consent-exempt (Schedule 1 clause 23). The fence is not (clause 23(2)).

A plunge pool in New Zealand costs about $14,500 to $39,000 for the kitset (incl. GST, Southern Plunge Pools and Tiny Pools price lists, read 5 November 2026), and roughly $35,000 to $60,000 all-in once you add installation and a fence. Anything that can hold 400 mm of water needs a barrier and a council inspection every three years. Most plunge pools need no building consent for the pool itself, but the fence always does.

How much does a plunge pool cost in NZ?

Three kinds of price get quoted, and they are not the same thing. A kitset price is the shell, and sometimes the pump and filter, delivered to you or collected. An installed price adds excavation or a slab, placing, plumbing and the first fill. An all-in price adds the barrier, any heating, the electrician, consent for the fence and the surrounds. The kitset makers do not publish an installation price, because it depends on the site: Southern Plunge Pools says delivery "varies by site" and installation is extra, and Tiny Pools offers its own preferred installers. The PoolHouse says it can install a plunge pool in 1 to 3 days once the site is prepared. Treat any figure without the fence in it as half the story.

Plunge pool sizes and prices, side by side

Southern Plunge Pools is the one New Zealand maker we found that publishes size, depth, volume and price together, so it is the clearest way to see what each extra metre costs. Water surface is the internal length × width, our arithmetic; it matters for the spa-cover rule below.

The pack includes a skimmer, two jets, a 750 W pump, a cartridge filter, cleaning gear and a pH test kit; the chlorinator is extra. An optional install-oversight package is $4,995 incl. GST. For scale, Spa World describes a typical plunge pool as about 4 × 2 m and a standard residential pool as about 9 × 4 m.

Delivery, the slab or hole, the electrical connection, fence consent and the surrounds are all site-specific and come on top. On heating, the rule of thumb in our heat pump guide (litres ÷ 1,000 = minimum kW) puts a 10,000-litre pool at about 10 kW, so ask whether a 9 kW unit suits your region and a cover. To check your own volume, use the pool volume calculator.

Is a plunge pool cheaper than a regular pool?

Yes, but by less than the shell price suggests. The worked example above comes to about $36,000–59,000; CheckMyBuilder puts a standard 8 × 4 m fibreglass pool at $35,000–60,000 excl. GST before the fence. The fixed costs (the barrier, access, the electrician, consent for the fence) barely shrink with the pool. The real saving is in the space, the heating bill and the chemicals, which scale with the water. Fibreglass pool costs · What a pool costs to run.

Does a plunge pool need a fence?

Yes, if it can hold water 400 mm deep or more, and every plunge pool in the tables above can. The barrier rules are the same as for any pool: at least 1.2 m high, no gaps over 100 mm, nothing climbable within 1.2 m outside it, and a gate that opens away from the pool and closes and latches itself (Building Act ss 162B–162C, Building Code F9). Pool fence costs · The full rules.

Can a heated plunge pool use a cover instead of a fence?

Only if it is small. In law a small heated pool is a heated pool with a water surface of 5 m² or less, designed for therapeutic or recreational use. It is treated like a spa: a complying safety cover can be the barrier where the top of every wall is at least 760 mm above the ground and the walls cannot be climbed (Building Code F9.3.2(b)).

Most plunge pools are over that line. Even the smallest Southern kitset, 2.3 × 2.3 m inside, has 5.29 m² of water, just over 5 m². A 3 m round pool has about 7.1 m². If a cover-only barrier is the point, ask for the internal water surface in writing before you buy, and confirm with your council. Cold-plunge tubs are not heated pools, so the small heated pool rules do not help them. Spa pool rules.

Do you need building consent for a plunge pool?

Usually not for the pool itself. Schedule 1 clause 23 exempts a pool of up to 35,000 litres supported directly by the ground, and the biggest Southern kitset holds 31,000. A raised or rooftop plunge pool has a much lower exempt limit: 8,000 litres at 0.5 m above the ground, 4,000 litres at 1 m, and those need structural thought anyway. The barrier always needs consent (clause 23(2)). Consent for pools.

Plunge pool or spa?

If what you want is a hot soak, a spa is the cheaper route: Spa World publishes New Zealand spa prices from about $2,999 to $29,999, and a spa with a complying lockable cover usually avoids a fence. A plunge pool earns its price if you want to stand, wade and cool off in summer, or swim against a jet, and it gives you more water than any spa. Spa pool prices · Swim spas.

What to ask before you sign

  • Is the price for the kitset only, or installed, with delivery, the slab or excavation, plumbing and the first fill?
  • Does it include GST?
  • Is the chlorinator included? Is the heat pump sized for this volume and my region?
  • Who designs and consents the barrier, and is that priced?
  • If heated: what is the internal water surface area? Above 5 m² a cover cannot be its barrier.
  • How does the shell get to the hole, and is a crane or hiab in the price?
