Those are the example's inputs, not a survey of New Zealand pools. What is useful is the shape: on a heated pool the heating is usually the biggest line, and on an unheated one the pump is.
The pump is the one you control
Pump cost is power rating × hours × days × your power price, which means every one of those four is a lever. Halve the hours and you halve that line. The arithmetic in the example above is worth doing with your own pump's kW rating and your own power price before you assume anyone else's number applies to you.
Heating, and the case for a cover
Calculate.co.nz's own note on its result is that a pool cover, an efficient pump and running it only as long as needed all cut costs, with heating the area where savings count most. On the capital side, CheckMyBuilder prices heating at $4,000–15,000 to install and calls a solar blanket the cheap end of it.
Spa pools: insulation is the running cost
Spa World says full-foam insulation can add about $2,000 to the retail price of a spa, and that over time the savings on power bills can be much more. That is the same trade-off as a pool cover, bought at the start.
What is not in these figures
- The 3-yearly barrier inspection. Auckland Council charges $209 an inspection plus a $69.67 annual targeted rate; Tauranga City Council covers the first inspection in rates and charges $204 for any additional one. Inspections.
- Repairs: pumps, cells, heaters and covers all wear out. We have not published replacement prices because we have no sourced New Zealand figures for them.
