How the check runs here
- Auckland Council schedules a barrier safety check about once every three years and writes to you roughly two weeks before it is in your neighbourhood.
- You only need to book a time if access is difficult, there is a dog, or you want to be there. Otherwise the inspector visits on the council's schedule.
- If the inspector cannot get to the pool area you are still charged for the visit and have to book a return.
- A barrier that fails is automatically re-booked for a re-check in 21 days. A site the council considers particularly dangerous is re-checked after 48 hours.
- The council can issue a notice to fix under the Building Act for a non-complying pool or barrier.
- If the council has your pool recorded as empty, contact it for an inspection before you refill it.
Auckland Council's own barrier page is worth reading alongside the national rules: councils publish their own summaries of acceptable solution F9/AS1, and they do not always agree with each other.
What a pool costs here
CheckMyBuilder's indicative figure for Auckland is $84,000, against a New Zealand typical of $75,000. It describes those regional numbers as its typical figure adjusted for regional labour and material differences, so treat it as a starting point rather than a measurement. Barrier fencing adds $5,000 – $25,000 and needs its own building consent.
