What a pool fence costs in New Zealand, glass and aluminium

Glass pool fencing costs about $300–900 a metre installed in NZ (2026), so a 30 m run is roughly $9,000–27,000 plus a gate. Aluminium from about $8,000 a perimeter. Per-metre table, worked example, DIY panel prices, consent and inspection fees.

Key takeaways

  • CheckMyBuilder (June 2026) prices barrier fencing at $5,000–25,000, excluding GST, and notes it needs its own building consent.
  • By type, installer Ultimate Pools publishes aluminium at around $8,000–12,000 for a standard perimeter, semi-frameless glass from $15,000, and fully frameless glass at $25,000–40,000 for a full enclosure (retail, GST-inclusive).
  • Glass per metre, installed: framed $300–400, semi-frameless $400–600, frameless $550–900 (Grand Glass, May 2026). A 30 m semi-frameless run is about $12,000–18,000 before the gate, our arithmetic.
  • Per metre, SPASA NZ's older figures (via Houzz, January 2023) put framed glass at about $630 a linear metre and unframed glass at about $1,150. Those are older than the rest of this page, so treat them as a floor.
  • The barrier always needs building consent, even when the pool does not (Building Act Schedule 1 clause 23(2)).
  • After it is built, the council inspects it at least every 3 years. In Auckland that is $209 an inspection, $209 more if it fails, and a $69.67 annual targeted rate (2026/27).

A compliant pool fence in New Zealand costs $5,000 to $25,000 for most pools (CheckMyBuilder, June 2026, excl. GST). The material decides most of it: aluminium is the cheapest published option at around $8,000–12,000 for a standard perimeter, semi-frameless glass starts from $15,000, and fully frameless glass reaches $25,000–40,000 for a full enclosure (Ultimate Pools, June 2026, incl. GST). Per metre, installed glass runs about $300–900 (Grand Glass, May 2026). Add the building consent, which the barrier always needs, and a council inspection at least every three years.

How much does a glass pool fence cost per metre?

Installed glass pool fencing costs about $300 to $900 a linear metre in New Zealand in 2026, depending on the system (Grand Glass, 12 May 2026). Framed glass is cheapest, frameless on spigots or a channel the dearest, and gates are priced on top at $400–1,500 each.

The sources do not agree, and it is worth knowing why. Grand Glass is a glass supplier quoting 2026 market rates and does not say whether GST is included; SPASA's 2023 figures are higher per metre. Grand Glass also says regional New Zealand often runs 10–20% below Auckland, curved or stepped panels add 20–30%, and an engineer's PS1 certificate, which some councils want for frameless glass, costs $400–1,200.

Worked example: a 30 m glass pool fence

  • Semi-frameless, installed: 30 m × $400–600 = $12,000–18,000, plus one gate at $400–1,500 = $12,400–19,500.
  • Frameless, installed in Auckland: 30 m × $600–900 = $18,000–27,000, plus one gate = $18,400–28,500, plus a PS1 if your council asks for one ($400–1,200).
  • Frameless, DIY supply only: 30 m × $300–500 = $9,000–15,000 for glass and spigots, and you still need the building consent and a fence that passes inspection.
  • Then add the building consent fee (set by your council) and old-fence removal if there is one ($50–200 a metre, Grand Glass).

All three are our arithmetic on Grand Glass's May 2026 rates, and they sit inside Ultimate Pools' published $15,000 (semi-frameless) to $25,000–40,000 (full frameless enclosure) ranges above, which is a fair cross-check.

How much is a glass pool fence panel at Bunnings or Mitre 10?

A single 1.2 m-high, 12 mm toughened glass pool panel costs roughly $120 to $260 at New Zealand hardware stores. Mitre 10 sells a Guardian 1,500 mm-wide panel for $258, certified to AS/NZS 2208 (read 7 November 2026), and Bunnings' ProtectorAl panels were listed at about $118–259 depending on width the same day. Spigots, hinges, the latch and the gate are extra, and a DIY fence needs the same building consent and inspection as a professional one.

Is aluminium pool fencing cheaper than glass?

Yes, usually by half or more. Grand Glass puts installed aluminium from about $150 a metre against $300–900 for glass, and Ultimate Pools publishes aluminium at $8,000–12,000 for a standard perimeter against $25,000–40,000 for full frameless glass. Glass costs more because of the toughened panels, the spigots or channel and, often, the engineering sign-off.

How do you work out a pool fence price per metre?

Measure the line the barrier will actually run, not the pool's edge. A barrier has to keep at least the immediate pool area inside it, and most families want a strip of paving or lawn inside too, so the run is usually well longer than the pool's perimeter. Then multiply. At SPASA's 2023 rates, a 30-metre run of framed glass is about 30 × $630 = $18,900, and the same run in unframed glass about 30 × $1,150 = $34,500. Both land inside Ultimate Pools' published ranges, which is a useful cross-check.

  • Gates cost more than panels. Every gate needs to open away from the pool and close and latch itself from any position, with the latch at least 1.5 m up where it can be reached from outside. One gate is cheaper than two.
  • Slope adds cost. Panels on a sloping section have to keep the 1.2 m height and the 100 mm gap limit at every point, which means stepped or custom panels.
  • Fixing into what is there. Core-drilling glass spigots into existing concrete or decking is different work from posts into lawn.
  • Consent and inspection are separate fees from the fence itself (below).

What is the cheapest way to fence a pool in NZ?

The cheapest fence is the shortest compliant one in the cheapest compliant material. On the published figures that is aluminium, enclosing no more of the garden than you need. Every option still has to meet the same rules: at least 1.2 m high at every point, no gaps over 100 mm, nothing climbable within 1.2 m outside it, and self-closing, self-latching gates. Check a fence against the rules.

  • Fence a smaller area. A tighter enclosure means fewer metres and often one gate instead of two.
  • Choose aluminium over glass. Ultimate Pools' aluminium starts at about a third of the price of fully frameless glass.
  • Use walls that already comply, carefully. A wall of the house can form part of the barrier, but every door from the house into the pool area then needs an alarm or must close itself, and windows that open into it must be restricted (Building Code F9.3.4). Fixing doors and windows can cost more than the fence it saves.
  • An above-ground pool's own walls. Whanganui District Council says an above-ground pool over 1.2 m high needs no separate fence if its sides are smooth and cannot be climbed. The ladder is the catch: see above-ground pool rules.
  • Boundary fences. A boundary fence can be part of a barrier only if it meets the same rules from the outside, including the neighbour's side. Ask your council before relying on one.

What is never cheaper: building without consent. A notice to fix about a pool barrier that is ignored is a $500 infringement, and on conviction a fine of up to $20,000 for an individual (Building Act s 168).

Does a pool fence need building consent?

Yes, always. Schedule 1 clause 23 of the Building Act exempts some pools from consent, but clause 23(2) says the exemption does not include a fence or hoarding restricting access to a pool. Tauranga City Council says every pool safety barrier must be installed under an approved building consent, even where the pool itself is exempt. Consent fees are set by each council and change every 1 July. Do you need consent for a pool?

What does a pool fence cost after it is built?

Your council must ensure the barrier is inspected at least once every three years (Building Act s 162D). These are the fees we have read on the councils' own pages for 2026/27:

Pool barrier inspection fees, 2026/27
CouncilFee
Auckland Council: each pool inspection$209
Auckland Council: extra for a failed inspection, or no access$209
Auckland Council: annual targeted rate for pool owners$69.67
Tauranga City Council: first compliance inspectionincluded in rates
Tauranga City Council: each additional inspection$204

A fence that fails costs you the re-inspection plus the fix, so getting the gate hardware and the climbable zone right the first time is cheaper than it looks. What happens if a pool fails inspection · Pool inspections.

Mesh, netting and trellis

Mesh barriers can be cheap, but the maximum hole size councils publish for them differ from one council to the next, so we do not print a number. If your barrier is mesh, netting or trellis, ask your council which aperture applies before you buy it. Editorial policy.
