Cost
How much does a swimming pool cost in NZ?
About $75,000 typically, from $35,000 for a budget job to $250,000+ at the premium end (CheckMyBuilder, June 2026). Its figures exclude GST unless stated, and exclude fencing, landscaping and heating.
How much does a fibreglass pool cost?
A standard 8 m × 4 m shell is $35,000–60,000 installed on a straightforward site (CheckMyBuilder). Installer Ultimate Pools publishes $75,000–150,000+ for a complete installation, because it is pricing more of the job.
How much does a concrete pool cost?
Sprayed concrete generally runs $80,000–160,000, and large or highly customised projects can pass $250,000 (CheckMyBuilder, June 2026).
How much is pool fencing?
$5,000–25,000 (CheckMyBuilder). By type, Ultimate Pools publishes aluminium from around $8,000–12,000, semi-frameless glass from $15,000, and fully frameless reaching $25,000–40,000 for a full enclosure.
What does a pool cost to run?
Commonly $1,000–2,000 a year (CheckMyBuilder). Calculate.co.nz's worked example of a heated pool totals about $2,275 a year, or roughly $44 a week.
Why don't you price plunge, lap or above-ground pools?
Because we could not find a New Zealand source that publishes their installed price and shows its working. Rather than guess, we left them out and said so on our editorial policy page.
Fencing and inspections
Does my pool need a fence?
If it is a residential pool that can hold water 400 mm deep or more and it is filled or partly filled, yes (Building Act ss 162B–162C). That includes inflatable and portable pools.
How high does a pool fence have to be?
At least 1.2 m at every point, measured above the ground and above anything permanent standing outside it within 1.2 m — a figure both Auckland Council and Tauranga City Council publish from acceptable solution F9/AS1.
How often is a pool fence inspected?
At least once every 3 years, within 6 months before or after the pool's anniversary date (Building Act s 162D). Your council may accept a certificate from an independently qualified pool inspector instead.
Do I need a fence for a spa pool?
You need a means of restricting access when it is not in use. A complying safety cover can be it, but only where the top of every wall is at least 760 mm above the adjacent floor or ground and the walls inhibit climbing (Building Code F9.3.2(b)).
Do I need building consent for a pool?
Usually for the pool, and always for the barrier. Schedule 1 clause 23 exempts a pool of 35,000 litres or less supported directly by the ground; clause 23(2) says that exemption does not include the fence.
What is the fine for a non-compliant fence?
A $500 infringement fee for failing to comply with a notice to fix about a pool barrier, and on conviction up to $20,000 for an individual or $60,000 for a body corporate (Building Act s 168).
My pool is from the 1990s. Do today's rules apply?
Section 450B saves pools built before 1 January 2017 where the barriers met the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 schedule and continue to, or where the pool's own walls meet a 1.2 m unclimbable-wall test with a removable ladder.

No. We are a cost and compliance guide with two free tools and one disclosed referral.
Can you certify my fence?
No. Only your council or an independently qualified pool inspector can. Our checker says 'likely to pass' and never 'compliant'.
Will you share my details?
Only if you tick a separate, unticked box on the referral form, and then with one builder. We do not sell details and we do not send them to several builders.
How do you get paid?
A builder pays us a referral fee if you ask for an introduction and go ahead with them, and one day a margin on pool-care products if we ever stock any. Nothing from you.
Can I buy anything here?
Not yet. There is no supplier, so there is no catalogue and no price. And we will not sell chlorine or pool acid online at all: they are dangerous goods for courier transport.
