Key takeaways

  • Resurfacing a concrete pool costs about $8,000–12,000 in basic white plaster, $12,000–18,000 in pebble or quartz and $16,000–22,000+ in premium aggregate (Poolpal, August 2026, for a 30,000–50,000 litre pool; GST not stated).
  • A fibreglass pool's gelcoat restoration costs $4,000–8,000 and a full relining $10,000–16,000 (Poolpal).
  • Priced by area, SaveBuild publishes about $220 per m² excluding GST for a fibreglass lining over a concrete pool, including prep, materials and labour.
  • Worked example: an 8 m × 4 m pool averaging 1.5 m deep has about 68 m² of surface, so 68 × $220 = $14,960 + GST ($17,204). Our arithmetic.
  • Plaster lasts about 8–12 years, pebble 12–20+ and a fibreglass gelcoat 15–20 (Poolpal). Epoxy paint needs recoating every 3–4 years (SaveBuild).

Poolpal's figures are for a standard 30,000–50,000 litre residential pool, include labour and materials, and do not say whether GST is in. SaveBuild's rate excludes GST, a 15% difference. SaveBuild sells fibreglass resurfacing across the upper North Island, so read its rate as one installer's budget price, not a market average.

How much does it cost to resurface a pool per square metre?

SaveBuild publishes about $220 per m² excluding GST for a fibreglass lining over a concrete pool, including prep, materials and labour, with the final price subject to inspection, access and repairs. The area that counts is the whole inside of the pool, floor and walls, not the water's surface.

That lands inside Poolpal's $12,000–20,000+ range for converting a concrete pool to a fibreglass coating, a useful cross-check. Steps, benches and a rounded floor add area; a cracked shell, leaks or a new tile band add work. Not sure of your depth or volume? Use the pool volume calculator.

Paint is the cheapest job and the most frequent one. Over 15 years, four or five repaints can cost more than one longer-lasting finish, so compare the price per year of life, not the price of the job. Ultimate Pools installs fibreglass pools, so its concrete figure comes from a competitor of concrete builders.

How do you know a pool needs resurfacing?

  • Rough to the touch. Plaster that grazes feet or snags swimwear has worn through its smooth top layer.
  • Stains that will not brush off, or patchy, blotchy colour, often from water that has been out of balance for a long time.
  • Flaking, hollow-sounding or lifting patches, where the finish has come away from the shell.
  • Blisters or chalky fading on fibreglass, a sign the gelcoat is breaking down.
  • Cracks or a level that keeps dropping. Check for a leak before resurfacing: a new finish over a leaking shell will not last.

Keeping pH and calcium hardness in range slows plaster etching and staining, which pushes the next resurface further out. The ideal levels are in our pool water testing guide.

Is it worth resurfacing a pool rather than replacing it?

Almost always, if the shell is sound. Even the dearest finish in the table is well under CheckMyBuilder's $80,000–160,000 for a new sprayed-concrete pool (June 2026). Poolpal suggests also getting replacement quotes once a resurface, structural repair and new equipment together pass about $25,000, and puts that combined job at $30,000–45,000. At that point a new fibreglass pool or a concrete rebuild is worth pricing alongside it.

How long does resurfacing take, and when should you book?

The pool is drained, the old surface prepared, the new one laid and then left to cure. SaveBuild says its fibreglass lining normally cures for 7 to 14 days, depending on weather and resin, before the pool is refilled and the water balanced. Poolpal says September to January is the busiest booking period and April to July the quieter one, so a winter booking is easier to get and the pool is ready for summer.

  • Ask where to empty the pool. Chlorinated water should not go into a stormwater drain; your council will say where it can go.
  • Do not leave a concrete pool empty longer than needed. In wet ground, groundwater can push on an empty shell; your contractor will plan the timing around it.
  • The fence still applies while the pool is empty. The barrier rules cover the pool, full or not, and a drained pool is a fall hazard.

Does resurfacing a pool need building consent?

Usually not. Schedule 1 of the Building Act exempts general repair, maintenance and replacement with comparable materials, and a new interior finish on an existing pool sits within that. Changing the pool's size or structure, or replacing the barrier, is different: the barrier always needs consent. If the job is more than a new surface, ask your council first. Do you need consent for a pool?

Questions

About $4,000–22,000+. Poolpal (August 2026) puts a concrete pool at $8,000–12,000 for basic plaster, $12,000–18,000 for pebble or quartz and $16,000–22,000+ for premium aggregate, and a fibreglass pool at $4,000–8,000 for gelcoat restoration or $10,000–16,000 for a full relining.

How much does it cost to resurface a fibreglass pool?

Poolpal puts a gelcoat restoration at $4,000–8,000 and a full relining at $10,000–16,000. A gelcoat usually lasts 15–20 years before either is needed.

How much is pool resurfacing per square metre?

SaveBuild publishes a budget rate of about $220 per m² excluding GST for a fibreglass lining over concrete, including prep, materials and labour. An 8 m × 4 m pool averaging 1.5 m deep has about 68 m² of surface: about $14,960 + GST.

How often does a pool need resurfacing?

Basic plaster lasts about 8–12 years and pebble or quartz 12–20+ (Poolpal). Ultimate Pools gives 10–15 years for a concrete pool. Epoxy paint needs recoating every 3–4 years (SaveBuild).

Is it worth resurfacing a pool?

Usually, if the shell is sound: even premium aggregate at $16,000–22,000+ is a fraction of the $80,000–160,000 CheckMyBuilder gives for a new concrete pool. Poolpal suggests getting replacement quotes too once repairs and equipment push the job past about $25,000.
