Swim spas in New Zealand: what they cost, and why a cover is not enough
Swim spas are listed from about $21,000 to $96,000 in New Zealand (Spa World and Alpine Spas, October 2026). A swim spa is too big to be a small heated pool in law, so it needs a full barrier, not just a cover. Running cost, consent, and how it compares with a pool.

Key takeaways
- Two New Zealand retailers list swim spas from $20,990 (Spa World, Fisher Play, 3.96 m) and $20,995 (Alpine Spas, Juno, 3.79 m) up to $95,688 (Spa World, Jacuzzi PowerPro 19) and $71,995 (Alpine Spas, Titus Turbo, 8.55 m), read 23 October 2026.
- A swim spa is not a spa in law. The small heated pool rule that lets a spa use a lockable cover instead of a fence applies only to a water surface of 5 m² or less; a swim spa 2.3 m wide and 3.8 m long is already about 8.7 m².
- So a swim spa needs a barrier like any pool (Building Act s 162B), with its own building consent, and CheckMyBuilder's fencing cost of $5,000–25,000 excl. GST applies on top of the price.
- Spa World says running costs range from $5 to $10 a day and vary; both retailers say a heat pump can cut heating cost by up to 75%.
- Against a standard 8 m × 4 m fibreglass pool at $35,000–60,000 excl. GST (CheckMyBuilder, June 2026), a swim spa arrives heated and plumbed, but it swims one person at a time and needs a pad, power, a hiab and the same fence.
A swim spa is a large, heated, self-contained spa with jets you swim against, usually 2.3 m wide and 3.8 to 8.5 m long. In New Zealand they are listed from about $21,000 to $96,000 (Spa World and Alpine Spas, 23 October 2026), before a concrete pad, electrical work, delivery by hiab and the fence. The fence is the part people miss: a swim spa's water surface is well over the 5 m² that makes a spa a small heated pool, so a lockable cover is not an acceptable barrier and the full pool fencing rules apply.

These are the retailers' own from-prices on the day, and both run promotions, so treat them as a snapshot. Neither page says whether delivery is included; Alpine Spas says a hiab is needed to place a swim spa and can be arranged at extra cost, and that it quotes delivery per order. Neither page says whether the price includes GST, so ask. A dual-zone model is two tanks in one cabinet, a swim lane at one temperature and a hot spa at another, which is why the biggest units cost the most.
On top of the unit, budget for a level reinforced pad able to carry several tonnes of water, a dedicated electrical circuit from an electrician, the hiab, and the barrier. CheckMyBuilder (June 2026) prices barrier fencing at $5,000–25,000 excl. GST, and that figure applies to a swim spa as much as to a pool, for the reason below.
Does a swim spa need a fence in NZ?
Yes. Any pool that can hold 400 mm of water needs a barrier (Building Act s 162B), and a swim spa holds well over a metre. The question people really mean is whether a swim spa can use a lockable cover instead of a fence, the way a spa pool can. It cannot, because of size.
A spa gets the cover option because it is a small heated pool: heated, designed for therapeutic or recreational use, and with a water surface area of 5 m² or less. Only then can a complying safety cover be the barrier, and only where the top of every wall is at least 760 mm above the surrounding ground (Building Code F9.3.2(b)). A swim spa 2.28 m wide and 3.79 m long, the smallest in the table above, has a water surface of roughly 8.6 m². The 5.9 m models are about 13.5 m², and the 8.55 m models about 19.5 m². None is a small heated pool, so none can rely on its cover.
Spa World says the same thing on its own swim spa page: a swim spa holding 40 cm or more of water needs a barrier that keeps unsupervised children under five out, and that "means a fence", with a 1.2 m fence as its example. So a swim spa needs a barrier that meets the full rules: at least 1.2 m high, no gaps over 100 mm, nothing climbable within 1.2 m of the outside, and a self-closing, self-latching gate opening away from the water. The cabinet walls can sometimes form part of a barrier if they are high enough and unclimbable, but a cover on top does not replace one. Pool fencing rules in NZ sets out the barrier rules; the spa pool rules explain the small heated pool exception that swim spas miss.
It follows that a swim spa also stays inside the council's three-yearly inspection duty. The exclusion for covered small heated pools (Building Act s 162D(1)(b)) is for pools of 5 m² or less, so your swim spa will be inspected like any other pool, and its barrier needs its own building consent (Schedule 1 clause 23(2)). What a pool inspection costs.
Do you need building consent for a swim spa?
For the barrier, always. For the unit itself, usually not, but ask the council. Schedule 1 clause 23 exempts a pool of up to 35,000 litres supported directly by the ground, and a 5.9 m swim spa holds well under that: 5.9 m × 2.3 m × 1.3 m is about 17,600 litres even before you allow for the seats and shell. Whether a swim spa sitting in its own cabinet on a pad counts as supported directly by the ground is a question for your council, as is the pad if it is a new slab. Do I need consent for a pool? covers the exemption and its limits.
What does a swim spa cost to run?
Power, mostly, because a swim spa is heated water sitting outside all year. Spa World's swim spa page says running costs range from $5 to $10 a day but vary, and that a heat pump can reduce them by up to 75%. Alpine Spas makes the same up-to-75% heat pump claim and sells its units with full insulation and a lockable thermal cover. The variables are the ones that decide any spa's bill: the set temperature, the air temperature, the insulation, and how often the cover is off. A swim spa holds several times the water of a spa, so the same inefficiencies cost several times as much. Pool running costs and pool heating cover the same arithmetic for pools.

A swim spa suits a small section, a buyer who wants to swim or train in winter, and anyone who wants heated water without an excavator on site. A pool suits a family who wants to be in the water together in summer and has the room. The common mistake is to buy a swim spa believing it avoids the fence; once you add the barrier, the gap between a swim spa and a small pool is smaller than the showroom price suggests. Plunge pools sit between the two and have the same fence rule.
Swim spa vs spa pool
If what you want is a hot soak, a spa is far cheaper and simpler: Spa World publishes New Zealand spa prices from about $2,999 to $29,999, and a spa of 5 m² or less with a complying lockable cover usually needs no fence at all. A swim spa earns its price only if you will actually swim or exercise in it. Spa pool prices and rules.
What to ask before you buy a swim spa
- Is the price GST-inclusive, and does it include delivery and the hiab lift onto the pad?
- What is the water surface area? Anything over 5 m² needs a full barrier, and every swim spa we found is.
- Who designs and consents the barrier, and is it priced? Ask for the council's requirements before the unit is ordered, not after it is sitting on the pad.
- What is the warranty on the shell, the structure and the equipment? Alpine Spas, for example, lists 10 years structural, 5 years on the acrylic shell, heater and jets, and 2 years on equipment for most models.
- What does the retailer say it costs to run at your set temperature, in your region, and is that with or without a heat pump?
- Does the pad need its own consent, and what does the electrician need to run?
If you are weighing a swim spa against a pool, price a pool line by line and compare the totals with the fence in both. Find a pool builder if the pool wins.
Questions
How much is a swim spa in NZ?
Listed from $20,990 (Spa World) and $20,995 (Alpine Spas) for the smallest models up to $95,688 (Spa World, Jacuzzi) and $71,995 (Alpine Spas), read 23 October 2026, before the pad, power, delivery and the fence.
Does a swim spa need a fence in NZ?
Yes. The lockable-cover option is only for small heated pools with a water surface of 5 m² or less. A swim spa is 2.3 m wide and at least 3.8 m long, so its surface is over 8 m², and it needs a full barrier under the Building Act, with its own building consent.
Is a swim spa cheaper than a pool?
The unit can be: the smallest swim spas list around $21,000 against $35,000–60,000 excl. GST for a standard fibreglass pool (CheckMyBuilder, June 2026). But the swim spa arrives heated, which a pool charges $4,000–15,000 for, and both need the same $5,000–25,000 barrier, so compare the totals.
How much does a swim spa cost to run?
Spa World says $5 to $10 a day, and that it varies. Both retailers we read say a heat pump can cut heating costs by up to 75%. Set temperature, insulation and keeping the cover on decide the bill.
Does a swim spa need building consent?
The barrier always does. The unit usually falls under the 35,000-litre exemption in Schedule 1 clause 23 if it is supported directly by the ground, but whether a cabinet on a pad qualifies is your council's call, so ask before ordering.
