Pool salt and salt chlorinators in New Zealand
A salt pool is still a chlorine pool. A salt chlorinator passes pool water over coated plates and converts dissolved salt into chlorine, which then does the same job as chlorine you pour in. You buy salt instead of chlorine, and you still have to watch pH, alkalinity and the cell itself.
What to look for
Chlorinators are rated by how much chlorine the cell produces in a day against pool volume. An undersized cell run flat out is the usual reason a salt pool will not hold a level in midsummer.
Salt is not used up by chlorination, but it leaves with backwashing, splash-out and rain overflow, so the level drops over a season and is topped up.
Chlorination in a salt pool tends to push pH up over time, which is why salt-pool owners buy acid and why acid is a dangerous good. We do not sell it and we do not recommend a dose.
Scale builds on the plates. A self-cleaning (reverse-polarity) cell reduces that but does not remove it. Cell replacement is the real running cost of a salt pool, so ask what a replacement cell costs before you buy the unit.

Is a salt pool chlorine-free?
No. The chlorinator makes chlorine from the salt in the water. The difference is where the chlorine comes from, not whether there is any.
Will you sell chlorine or pool acid?
No. Chlorine and acid are dangerous goods for courier transport and we will not ship them. If we ever list them, it will be because a supplier ships them directly under its own dangerous-goods compliance, and the page will say so.
