Key takeaways
- Tradie Tools NZ (June 2026) puts roof-panel solar pool heating at $4,000–8,000 to install and $200–500 a year to run.
- Pacific Pools sizes panels at 50–100% of the pool's surface area: 16–32 m² of panels for an 8 m × 4 m pool.
- Its line-by-line pricing for a full 32 m² system comes to $10,000–16,000 with unglazed panels and $16,000–26,000 with glazed ones (April 2024).
- A heat pump is cheaper to put in ($3,000–6,000) but dearer to run ($800–2,500 a year) on the same Tradie Tools figures.
- Solar only heats when the sun is out. It stretches summer; it does not give you a warm pool in July.
Solar pool heating in New Zealand costs about $4,000 to $8,000 installed for roof panels, and $200 to $500 a year to run (Tradie Tools NZ, June 2026). It is the cheapest heater to run, but it only works when the sun is out, so it lengthens summer rather than heating a pool through winter.
How much does solar pool heating cost in NZ?
Most published New Zealand figures land between $3,000 and $8,000 for a typical home pool, with a bigger, glazed system running well past $10,000. The spread comes from pool size, which sets the panel area, and from the roof: height, pitch and distance from the pool all change the labour. None of the sources below says whether its figures include GST, so ask when you get a quote.

How many solar panels does my pool need?
Plan on panels covering 50 to 100% of the pool's surface area, which is Pacific Pools' rule of thumb. An 8 m × 4 m pool has 32 m² of surface, so it needs 16 to 32 m² of panels; a 10 m × 5 m pool needs 25 to 50 m². Go to the top of the range for a windy or part-shaded site, or a southern one.
| Pool | Surface | Panel area |
|---|---|---|
| 6 m × 3 m | 18 m² | 9 – 18 m² |
| 8 m × 4 m | 32 m² | 16 – 32 m² |
| 10 m × 5 m | 50 m² | 25 – 50 m² |
| 12 m × 6 m | 72 m² | 36 – 72 m² |
That is a lot of roof. A 32 m² array is roughly the footprint of a single garage, and it wants to face north, sit close to the pool so the pipe run is short, and be on a roof that can carry the panels full of water. If you don't have that roof, a heat pump is usually the answer. Not sure of your pool's size in litres for the heat pump sums? Our pool volume guide works it out.
Worked example: an 8 m × 4 m pool
Using Pacific Pools' published line items (April 2024) and its sizing rule, here is what the arithmetic gives for a standard 8 m × 4 m pool. This is our sum of its figures, not a quote.
| Line | Smaller array (16 m²) | Full array (32 m²) |
|---|---|---|
| Panels at $150–250 per m² | $2,400 – $4,000 | $4,800 – $8,000 |
| Solar controller | $400 – $800 | $400 – $800 |
| Valves and fittings | $200 – $400 | $200 – $400 |
| Installation | $4,900 – $9,800 | $4,900 – $9,800 |
| Total | $7,900 – $15,000 | $10,300 – $19,000 |
Installation is the biggest line in both columns, which is why a pool with a low, close roof costs so much less than one with a two-storey roof across the section. The DIY route is cheaper but not like-for-like: at 3.4 m² a panel, the $299 Pump Planet panel would take 5 panels for 16 m² ($1,495) or 10 for 32 m² ($2,990), before any controller, pipework or roof fixing, and it is sold for above-ground and small pools rather than roof mounting.
What does solar pool heating cost to run?
Very little. The sun is free, so the running cost is the pool pump pushing water up to the roof, plus upkeep. Tradie Tools NZ puts it at $200–500 a year; Pacific Pools at $200–400 a season for pump power and $100–200 a year for maintenance; Little Pools at $100–200 a year. On Tradie Tools' figures a heat pump costs $800–2,500 a year to run and gas $2,000–5,000.
| Heater | Install | Running a year |
|---|---|---|
| Solar (roof panels) | $4,000 – $8,000 | $200 – $500 |
| Heat pump | $3,000 – $6,000 | $800 – $2,500 |
| Gas | $2,000 – $4,000 | $2,000 – $5,000 |
Is solar pool heating worth it in New Zealand?
It is worth it if you have a big, sunny, north-facing roof near the pool and you mainly want to swim from October to April. Over ten years it is usually the cheapest heater to own, because it costs so little to run. It is not worth it if you want a reliably warm pool on demand or through winter: on a cloudy week it adds almost nothing.
The money, at the midpoints of the Tradie Tools figures: solar is about $6,000 to install and $350 a year to run; a heat pump about $4,500 and $1,650 a year. Solar costs roughly $1,500 more up front and saves roughly $1,300 a year, so on those numbers it pays back the difference in about a year and a bit, and over ten years comes to about $9,500 against $21,000. That is our arithmetic, and it flatters solar slightly, because the heat pump also heats on the days solar can't. Little Pools' own ten-year comparison points the same way: $5,300 for solar against $11,450 for an electric heater and $12,900–16,900 for gas.
- It suits: sunny regions, a pool used mostly in the warmer months, a roof that faces north and sits close to the pool, owners who want low running costs.
- It doesn't suit: a shaded section or south-facing roof, swimming in winter, heating the pool up quickly for a weekend, or a pool far from any roof.
- Many pools use both: solar does the work on sunny days and a heat pump tops up when it is cloudy, which keeps the heat pump's bill down.
How long do solar pool panels last?
Little Pools says the best panel collectors can last 20 to 30 years in ideal conditions while keeping 80% of their output, and that strip-type collectors usually carry warranties of around 10 years. Hail, UV and how the panels drain in a frost all shorten that, so read the warranty and ask what it covers on your roof.
Solar pool heating or a solar cover?
Start with the cover. A solar bubble cover lets the sun warm the water and stops heat leaving at night, for a fraction of the cost of panels, and it makes panels or a heat pump work less. One local supplier bundles roof solar, a 4.5 mm thermal blanket and a roller at $17,500 including GST, which shows how the two are meant to go together. Our pool covers guide compares the types, and pool heating NZ compares solar with heat pumps and gas.
Plan it when you build
Pipework to the roof and a spare valve on the pool plumbing are far cheaper to put in during the build than to retrofit. Even if solar comes later, ask your builder to leave provision for it. The pool cost calculator shows what heating adds to a new pool, and pool running costs shows what it saves once it is in.
Questions
How much does solar pool heating cost in NZ?
About $4,000–8,000 installed for roof panels, according to Tradie Tools NZ (June 2026). A full 32 m² system priced line by line by Pacific Pools comes to $10,000–16,000 with unglazed panels and $16,000–26,000 with glazed ones (April 2024).
Do solar pool heaters work in New Zealand?
Yes, on sunny days and in the warmer months. They warm the pool slowly and add little on cloudy days, so they extend summer into spring and autumn rather than heating a pool through winter.
How many solar panels do I need for my pool?
Panel area equal to 50–100% of the pool's surface area, by Pacific Pools' rule of thumb. An 8 m × 4 m pool (32 m²) needs 16–32 m² of panels.
Is solar or a heat pump better for a pool?
Solar is cheaper to run ($200–500 a year against $800–2,500 for a heat pump, Tradie Tools NZ) but only heats in sun. A heat pump heats reliably on cool and cloudy days. Many owners use solar with a heat pump as back-up.
What is the cheapest way to heat a swimming pool?
A solar cover is the cheapest, and it helps every other heater. Of the heaters, solar panels are the cheapest to run.
How long do solar pool heating panels last?
Little Pools says the best panel collectors can last 20–30 years in ideal conditions while keeping 80% of their output. Strip collectors commonly come with warranties of around 10 years.
